About Emotional Regulation & Overwhelm

For people who feel emotionally overwhelmed, struggle to understand their reactions or want to develop more helpful ways of responding to difficult feelings.
Understanding Your Emotions & Finding A Way Forward Do Your Emotions Sometimes Feel Bigger Than You Can Manage?Perhaps you find yourself becoming overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious or upset more quickly than you would like. You might feel that your reactions take over before you've had time to think, or that you spend a lot of energy trying to keep your emotions under control. You may also find yourself shutting down, withdrawing from others, becoming irritable or feeling emotionally exhausted.
If any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Emotional experiences can be complicated, and understanding them is not always easy. Counselling can offer a supportive space to explore what you are experiencing, develop greater self-awareness and discover more helpful ways of responding to difficult feelings.
What is Emotion Regulation?Emotion regulation is our ability to recognise, understand and respond to our emotions in ways that support our wellbeing and help us navigate everyday life. It does not mean suppressing your feelings, always staying calm or pretending that everything is okay. Emotions can provide important information about our needs, experiences, boundaries and relationships. The challenge is learning how to make room for our feelings without feeling controlled or overwhelmed by them. With greater awareness, it can become easier to recognise what is happening internally, understand what may be contributing to a reaction and choose how you want to respond.
When Emotions Become OverwhelmingEmotional overwhelm can look different for different people. You might recognise some of the following experiences: -Feeling overwhelmed by situations that others seem to manage easily.-Becoming frustrated, angry, anxious or upset and finding it difficult to settle afterwards.-Overthinking conversations or replaying situations in your mind.-Feeling emotionally exhausted from trying to keep everything together.-Finding it difficult to identify what you are feeling or what you need.-Withdrawing, shutting down or avoiding difficult conversations.-Experiencing recurring patterns in relationships that leave you feeling distressed.-Being highly self-critical about your emotional reactions.-Feeling that your emotions build up until they become difficult to manage.
You do not need to identify with every example. Nor do you need to be experiencing a crisis to seek support. Sometimes, simply wanting to understand yourself better is a worthwhile reason to begin counselling.
Why Can Emotion Regulation Be Difficult? Our emotional responses are influenced by many factors, including our life experiences, current circumstances, relationships, stress levels and the ways we have learned to cope with difficult situations. Sometimes our responses develop as ways of protecting ourselves or getting through challenging experiences. These responses may have made sense at one time, even if they no longer feel helpful in our present circumstances. When life becomes demanding, it can also become harder to pause, reflect and respond thoughtfully.
How Counselling May Help Counselling provides an opportunity to slow down, reflect on your experiences and explore your emotional responses in a supportive environment. Rather than judging yourself for your reactions, counselling can help you become curious about them: what you are experiencing, what might be contributing to it, and what you may need. There is no single explanation for emotional overwhelm, and understanding your own experience is an individual process.
Our Work May Involve:-Developing emotional awareness-Learning to recognise and describe your feelings, notice changes in your emotional state and identify what may be happening beneath the surface.-Understanding your triggers and patterns-Exploring situations, thoughts, feelings and relationship dynamics that tend to leave you overwhelmed, frustrated or distressed.-Recognising your needs and boundaries-Becoming more aware of what matters to you, what feels difficult and how you might communicate your needs more clearly.-Exploring your usual coping responses-Understanding what you tend to do when emotions become difficult, without automatically labelling those responses as wrong or bad.-Developing more helpful ways of responding-Exploring practical ways to pause, reflect, manage distress and respond to challenging situations with greater awareness.-Building self-understanding and self-compassion-Finding ways to relate to yourself with less judgement and more curiosity, particularly when things do not go as you had hoped.
The aim is not to eliminate difficult emotions. It is to develop a more understanding and workable relationship with them.
My Approach To Emotional Regulation CounsellingMy counselling approach draws on Gestalt therapy, which places emphasis on awareness, present-moment experience and understanding the relationship between our thoughts, feelings, bodily experiences and interactions with the world around us. Rather than focusing only on what you think you should feel or do, we can explore what you are actually experiencing and what you notice about yourself in different situations. This may include becoming more aware of emotional patterns, exploring how you respond to challenges and relationships, and considering what feels meaningful or helpful for you. Our work is collaborative. You bring your own experiences, knowledge and priorities, and we work together to explore them at a pace that feels manageable. There is no expectation that you arrive with all the answers. Counselling is a place to begin making sense of things.
What If I Don't Really Understand My Emotions? You do not need to be able to explain your feelings clearly before coming to counselling. Some people experience emotions intensely but struggle to put them into words. Others feel disconnected from their emotions, find it difficult to know what they need, or only recognise how distressed they have become after a situation has passed. We can start with what you do notice, even if that is simply feeling unsettled, exhausted, confused or stuck. Developing greater awareness can be a gradual process. There is no right or wrong way to begin.
Is Emotional Regulation Counselling Right For Me?You may find counselling helpful if you would like to understand your emotional responses, manage feelings that seem difficult to navigate, explore recurring patterns or develop a greater sense of choice in how you respond to life's challenges. You might be functioning well in many areas of your life while still finding certain emotions or situations difficult to manage. You do not have to wait until things become unbearable to seek support.
Take The Next StepYou do not have to understand everything you are feeling before you begin. If you are unsure whether counselling with me is suitable for your needs, you are welcome to make an enquiry so we can discuss what you are looking for and whether my approach may be appropriate.
